Story Builder – A Simple and Creative Way to Write Stories
Writing a story in a foreign language is a challenging task. In order to make it slightly easier for students this activity gives them the foundation. The aim of this activity is to help your students not only develop their creative writing but also to practice and review vocabulary, grammar and word order. This activity is suitable for beginners, intermediate level students and advanced learners. It can be easily adapted . You can use this activity to easily review vocabulary that you have covered in class. There are also pre and post activity tasks that increase the difficulty of the activity.
How to Play – This activity works best for groups of 3-4 students. It can be done with larger groups but I prefer to keep students in smaller groups, this ensures that students are engaged and focused. Each student in the group is given 10 words from the word bank. The words are selected at random from all of the categories. The PDF contains the foundations of two stories. Each story is broken down into 10 simple sentences and a title. Students are presented with the first sentence of the story and in turn must roll a dice. Depending on the outcome of the roll the student must swap a word, add a word or reorder the sentence. Students work through the sentences to create a creative story.
